Crime Stoppers began in 1976. A Canadian detective by the name of Greg MacAleese, working in Albuquerque, New Mexico was investigating a gas station hold-up. Unfortunately, there were no leads and the investigation came to a stop after 6 weeks.

MacAleese believed that for every person that committed a crime, there was at least one other person who knew about it. He also believed that people were afraid of repercussions.

MacAleese made cash rewards available for individuals willing to offer information. Within 48 hours of posting the reward, the Police had two people arrested and later convicted. This was the birth of CRIME STOPPERS.

Crime Stoppers has three major components that work in conjunction with local police departments to solve crimes and help keep communities safe. With over 1000 programs world wide, Crime Stoppers serves as a valuable asset to any law enforcement agency.

The international branch of Crime Stoppers received standing recognition with the United Nations in 2006. The Canadian branch has over 90 Crime Stoppers programs running throughout the Country.

The Kawartha-Haliburton Crime Stoppers program opened their doors in 1989, and over the years has maintained the original principle of helping law enforcement agencies solve crimes and make communities safe.

Crime Stoppers must rely totally on fundraising events to run the program. Crime Stoppers is operated by a volunteer Board of Directors that oversee the operation of the program.

The Board is responsible for fundraising, raising awareness of the programs, and educating the public. The program has two police offers as coordinators, from the City of Kawartha Lakes Service and the OPP.

They receive the tips and assign police investigation to the tip. When an arrest has been made, the caller is eligible up to a $2,000.00 cash reward.

The Board will determine a fair amount to be rewarded to the individual who supplied the tip.
